Torrevieja Police Officer Injured in Accidental Gun Discharge

A Torrevieja police officer was injured when a colleague accidentally discharged his service pistol at the force's main station armoury on August 5. The officer, who was preparing for his shift, had failed to properly check whether a round was in the chamber before firing. The bullet struck a hard surface, causing fragments to enter another officer's arm.

The officer who fired the weapon acknowledged his mistake and apologized to the injured colleague. An incident report stated that he had handled the pistol in a general access area of the armoury, outside the designated safety area. The officer who discharged the pistol is a veteran member of the force, and he attributed his mistake to possible haste and stress.

He completed a firearms training exercise that covered safety rules, handling, and assembly, which resolved the temporary withdrawal of his service weapon. The disciplinary proceedings remain open, as investigators are looking into why the pistol was handled outside the designated safe area.
