MCMC probes complaints on WhatsApp accounts being hacked and blocked

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating complaints from users who have reported their WhatsApp accounts being hacked, blocked, or otherwise inaccessible. The MCMC has forwarded the issue to Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, to determine the appropriate actions to take. The commission will continue to monitor the matter closely and work with Meta to safeguard user interests.

Users affected by these issues are encouraged to reach out to official WhatsApp channels for assistance with account recovery or verification. The MCMC clarifies that hacking an account and having it suspended by WhatsApp are distinct problems. When an account is taken over by malicious individuals, it can be exploited for fraudulent activities, spam, or behavior that violates WhatsApp's terms of service, resulting in a suspension.

The MCMC advises the public to refrain from sharing verification codes or security PINs, enable Two-Step Verification, and avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading unverified applications. Moreover, the commission warns users to stay alert for individuals or entities offering account recovery services that require payment, personal information, or verification codes.

If users are unable to resolve their issues via official WhatsApp channels, they can file a complaint with the MCMC. The commission will then take further action and refer the case to Meta for additional investigation and resolution.
