MCMC submits cases related to WhatsApp accounts to Meta

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has received complaints from the public concerning WhatsApp accounts that have been compromised, blocked, or rendered inaccessible. In response, MCMC has referred the matter to Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, for clarification and appropriate action.

MCMC emphasizes that compromised WhatsApp accounts can be misused for fraudulent activities, spam, or other violations of WhatsApp's terms of service, leading to account blocking. It is crucial for users to understand that compromised and blocked accounts are two separate issues. Compromised accounts can be exploited by irresponsible parties for malicious purposes, resulting in their subsequent blocking by the platform.

To protect user interests, MCMC advises affected users to utilize official WhatsApp channels for account recovery or verification. It is strongly recommended that users refrain from sharing verification codes or security PINs with anyone. Additionally, activating the two-step verification feature and avoiding suspicious links or applications can enhance account security.

MCMC warns the public against engaging with parties offering account recovery services that request money, personal information, or verification codes. Users are advised to be cautious of such offers and refrain from providing any sensitive information.

In cases where resolution cannot be achieved through official WhatsApp channels, users are encouraged to submit a complaint to MCMC. The commission will then forward the case to Meta for further action, ensuring that the user's interests are protected.
