British climber dies after falling 60m on Spanish mountainside

A British climber aged 28 lost his life after plummeting approximately 60 meters from the summit of Torrecerredo, one of the highest peaks in the northern Spanish Cantabrian Mountains, according to the Spanish Civil Guard. The incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon when the climber tumbled into a gully while descending. The emergency services were promptly alerted, and police and air units were dispatched to the scene around 13:27 local time (11:27 GMT). The climber's body was eventually recovered by a mountain rescue team.

The UK Foreign Office confirmed it was in touch with local authorities following reports of the death of a British national in Spain. Spanish emergency services initially received a call about the unfortunate event on the eastern face of the mountain and subsequently deployed a rescue group in a medical helicopter. A doctor among the rescue team confirmed the climber's death at around 14:18, and they continued to guard the body until a Civil Guard helicopter arrived approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes later.

Specialist mountain rescuers were then lowered via winch to the accident site, where they retrieved the climber's body and personal belongings.

The climber's identity, identified as English, has not been disclosed by Spanish authorities. The accident occurred as the climber was approximately 20 meters away from the mountain's summit. Torrecerredo stands at an elevation of around 2,650 meters and is situated within the Picos de Europa, a region renowned among climbers and hikers.

The region's tourism board describes the route up the mountain as "very difficult," with a demanding ascent, cautioning climbers to exercise extreme caution on steep and exposed upper sections during their descent. Additionally, Sepa Asturias reported that a 54-year-old French woman sustained a leg injury on the mountain range during the same day and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention by emergency services.
