You seek sanctuary against kidnappers – Baffour Awuah defends retreat to Parliament

Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has defended his decision to seek refuge in Parliament following a run-in with Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) officials. The lawyer explained that he feared he might be unlawfully arrested and abducted, following his media address outside court. Upon meeting an EOCO representative, Baffour Awuah insisted on traveling in his own vehicle, which she refused.

When he demanded to see her identification, proving her EOCO affiliation, she could not produce any ID. Fearing for his safety, Awuah chose to remain in his vehicle and approach EOCO once he was confident the process was legitimate. Denying accusations that he was attempting to flee, Awuah insisted this was an unlawful arrest, an attempt by individuals who refuse to cooperate with the law.

He defended his decision to seek sanctuary in Parliament, even though the House was on recess, stating that seeking sanctuary against kidnappers is not wrong. Awuah affirmed that he was not deterred from appearing before EOCO once the proper procedures were in place. He also emphasized that his role as a lawyer did not warrant his arrest, asserting that it is not common for lawyers to be arrested merely for representing their clients.

Baffour Awuah expressed readiness to confront EOCO when they were prepared to adhere to the correct procedures.
