The UK Football Policing Unit strongly opposes the idea, citing a history of alcohol-fueled violence and disorder among certain football supporters. They warn that permitting more alcohol during matches would be irresponsible and potentially exacerbate safety issues. Police chiefs have called for a meeting with Burnham to discuss the safety implications of such a change.

Despite opposition, football authorities and supporters' groups back Burnham's proposal, with the English Football League welcoming a review and the Football Supporters' Association arguing the current rules are outdated. Women's football matches have already seen alcohol consumption allowed during pitch viewings after an 18-month trial.

Burnham's proposal may prompt a broader review of whether similar regulations should apply to men's football.
