PM Shehbaz stresses Islamabad MoU implementation in meeting with Pezeshkian

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif engaged in discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday, emphasizing the significance of fulfilling the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. Signed in June, this 14-point interim agreement aimed to resolve the ongoing conflict. As mediator, Pakistan signed the agreement, but the conflict persisted with sporadic incidents and a US naval blockade on Iranian ports while Iran maintained control over traffic through the strategic waterway.

During the meeting, PM Shehbaz expressed "deep concern over the prolonged conflict" and stressed the need for restraint, de-escalation, and persistent diplomatic efforts to attain peace and stability in the region. He also highlighted the importance of implementing the Memorandum of Understanding and reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to continue its constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability.

Both leaders discussed the evolving regional situation, with Pezeshkian acknowledging Pakistan's "principled diplomacy and concerted efforts for regional peace and security." The two sides agreed to maintain regular consultations and close coordination to address challenges and exploit opportunities for regional peace, security, and prosperity.

Regarding bilateral ties, they affirmed the strong and long-standing relationship between Pakistan and Iran, underscoring the necessity to further enhance cooperation in various mutually beneficial areas. The meeting occurred during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with key officials from both nations present.

This encounter follows Pakistan's ongoing efforts to bring the US and Iran back to the negotiating table concerning the Middle East war.
