Lebanon seeks 'new chapter' with Iran as leaders hold rare talks at UN

Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam expressed his nation's desire for a "new chapter" in its relationship with Iran following a rare meeting with Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The historic face-to-face discussion between senior officials from both countries occurred while they were in New York for the annual assembly.

Historically, Iran has wielded significant influence over Lebanese politics, primarily through the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which is supported by Tehran. This influence led to Lebanon's entanglement in the Iran-Iraq War in March when Hezbollah joined the conflict in support of its Iranian allies. The Israeli military subsequently launched a devastating campaign within Lebanon.

Prior to the March conflict, Prime Minister Salam's government had been striving to limit Iran's sway in Lebanon, notably by disarming Hezbollah. During the meeting, Salam conveyed to Pezeshkian Lebanon's stance against being a battleground for regional disputes and its aspiration to establish a robust bilateral relationship grounded in mutual respect for sovereignty and independence.

Salam also expressed hope that Iran would designate a new ambassador to Lebanon, a matter that had been contentious between the two nations. The Iranian envoy, Mohammad Reza Sheibani, had his appointment revoked and was barred from entering Lebanon following the March violence. As a substitute, Lebanon has sought support from the United States to resolve the conflict with Israel.

In June, an understanding was reached in Washington for Israeli forces to withdraw from certain Lebanese territories where Hezbollah had been disarmed, although the implementation has encountered various obstacles.

Hezbollah has steadfastly maintained that it will not surrender its weapons, asserting their necessity for self-defense against Israel. In Iran, state media provided no further details regarding the meeting between Pezeshkian and Salam. The Iranian President had delivered his address to the UN assembly on the preceding day, during which he cautioned that no single country could guarantee security in the Middle East. He emphasized, "Peace that does not encompass all is no peace."
