Lebanon seeks 'new chapter' with Iran as leaders hold rare talks at UN

Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam expressed his country's desire for a "new chapter" in relations with Iran following a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the UN General Assembly in New York. This unprecedented face-to-face encounter between high-ranking officials from both nations occurred as they were present in the city for the international conference.

For decades, Iran has wielded significant influence over Lebanese affairs due to the presence of Hezbollah, a prominent Iranian-backed group in the region. This involvement led Lebanon to become embroiled in the conflict in March when Hezbollah joined the fight in support of its Tehran allies. Israel retaliated with a forceful campaign within Lebanon.

Prior to this unrest, Salam's administration had been striving to limit Iran's impact in Lebanon, including disarming Hezbollah. Speaking to Pezeshkian, Salam emphasized Lebanon's intent to "avoid becoming a battlefield for regional conflicts or a venue for exchanging messages." He further stated Lebanon's aspiration to initiate a "new chapter" with Iran, fostering a robust state-to-state relationship built on mutual respect for sovereignty and independence.

He also suggested Iran consider nominating a new ambassador to Lebanon, addressing a contentious issue between the countries. Despite Iran's envoy Mohammad Reza Sheibani having his approval revoked and being barred from Lebanon following the March clashes, Lebanon has sought assistance from the US to bring an end to the Israel-Lebanon conflict.

In June, an agreement was reached in Washington for Israeli forces to withdraw from certain Lebanese areas where Hezbollah had been disarmed; however, the implementation of this arrangement has encountered numerous obstacles. Hezbollah has maintained its stance, refusing to relinquish its weapons, claiming they are necessary for defense against Israel.

No specifics were provided by Iranian state media regarding the meeting between Pezeshkian and Salam. The Iranian President delivered his address to the UN assembly the day prior, during which he cautioned that no single nation could guarantee security in the Middle East. He asserted, "Peace that does not encompass all is no peace."
