As Moscow steps up attacks, Kyiv residents brace for harsh winter

As Russia escalates attacks on Kyiv, residents of the Ukrainian capital are bracing for a harsh winter, having learned from the brutal winter of 2021-2022. The frequent air raid alerts, which have become a nightly occurrence, have forced families to prepare for potential power and heating disruptions. Oleksandra Matveieva, founder of a Facebook group for mothers, reported that many mothers are ready to evacuate their families as long as the destination is not too far or expensive.

Travel Mama Club, an advice forum for travelling mothers, has seen a surge in requests for accommodation in safer areas of Ukraine or abroad. While some are hoping for a milder winter, others are preparing for the worst, dusting off generators, portable batteries, and hot water bottles. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko affirmed that the city has completed 80 percent of its preparations for the winter, while Naftogaz CEO Sergiy Fedorenko acknowledged that the strikes are stronger and more dangerous than before.

Despite these challenges, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed that Ukrainians will make Russia pay for its attacks on their energy infrastructure.
