Russia slams Kyiv with ballistic missiles as Ukrainians brace for harsh winter

Over the past month, Russia has intensified its attacks on Kyiv, with air raid alerts now occurring nightly and frequently. Residents are preparing for a harsh winter, drawing parallels to last year's ordeal when Russian forces crippled the city's energy and heating infrastructure.

Oleksandra Matveieva, a Facebook group founder, noted a surge in discussions about seeking refuge in safer areas, both within and outside Ukraine. People are exploring various options, from moving to western Ukraine to booking refundable accommodations abroad. However, many are unsure if they will actually depart.

Since last month, Russian assaults on the capital have significantly increased, with strikes occurring both during and outside of nighttime hours. These alerts disrupt daily life, particularly in critical facilities like schools and hospitals, which adhere to stringent safety protocols.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the UN General Assembly, warning that this winter could be particularly severe for Ukrainians. He pledged that, although painful, Russia must endure Ukraine's response. The Ukrainian government has taken steps to bolster the energy system, repairing 4.8 gigawatts of generating capacity and aiming to restore or build over 10 gigawatts this year.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko has acknowledged the city's preparedness for winter, having completed 80 percent of its preparations. Despite criticism, he remains confident that the city will withstand the challenges ahead. Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmygal expressed concerns about Russia's potentially more aggressive tactics, including the destruction of water supplies. Residents, however, remain hopeful for a milder winter and are taking necessary precautions.
