Uttarakhand school's anti-mobile 'lesson' under scanner

A school in Uttarakhand hosted an anti-mobile phone lesson that has now come under scrutiny after a video of the event went viral on social media. The classroom in Khatima, Udham Singh Nagar district, staged an alarming exercise in which a child was shown with bandaged eyes and told classmates that his eyes had been removed due to excessive mobile phone usage. The incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness and appropriateness of the awareness program.

The video depicts a child with his eyes covered in bandages, apparently injured after using a mobile phone excessively. He then informs other students that doctors had removed both of his eyes as a result of overuse. Some children were heard crying and screaming during the demonstration, while others promised to never use mobile phones again.

School officials claim that the activity was designed to discourage excessive mobile phone use and educate students about the negative effects of prolonged screen time. The organization organized the activity after concerns were raised about the increasing use of smartphones among children. The school management reportedly considered the exercise as a method of illustrating the impact of excessive screen time to the pupils.

However, the emotional reaction of the children, particularly their visible fear and distress, has brought the activity under questioning. The district education authorities have initiated an inquiry to investigate the incident and submit a report. The district education officer, Harendra Kumar Mishra, has directed the Khatima Block Education Officer to conduct the investigation and provide a detailed report.

Udham Singh Nagar District Education Officer Harendra Kumar Mishra has stated that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry. Khatima Sub-Divisional Magistrate Tushar Saini has also expressed concern that activities that instill fear in children should be avoided. He has advised the school management to ensure that programs conducted for children do not negatively affect their well-being.

The inquiry is expected to examine the planning and execution of the activity, as well as whether proper precautions were taken when involving children in the program. This incident has sparked a broader discussion about how schools address the growing dependence of children on smartphones. While excessive screen time has become a concern for parents and schools, an awareness program involving young children must also consider how the message may be interpreted literally by the children.

At this point, the education department is awaiting the inquiry report before deciding on any potential actions.
