Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 15 years in prison for 2006 sex crime in New York

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie mogul, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday in Manhattan for a felony sex crime that occurred in 2006. The sentencing followed a lengthy legal battle that spanned over six years. Weinstein's 2020 conviction for sexually assaulting former TV production assistant Miriam Haley was overturned by New York's highest court, citing testimony from other women whose claims were not part of the original case.

He was found guilty again at a retrial last year. Once a powerful figure in the entertainment industry, known for Oscar-winning productions like "Shakespeare in Love," "Pulp Fiction," and "Chocolat," Weinstein's career came to an abrupt end after sexual assault allegations surfaced in 2017, igniting the #MeToo movement. The 74-year-old, who has consistently denied raping or sexually assaulting anyone, was quickly removed from the courtroom in a wheelchair after the sentencing.

Some of his accusers were seen hugging upon his exit. He is expected to appeal the decision and is likely to remain incarcerated until at least his late 80s.
