Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 15 years in New York for 2006 sexual assault

Harvey Weinstein, the prominent movie producer, was sentenced to 15 years in prison in Manhattan on Wednesday for a felony sex crime. This comes after a lengthy legal battle that lasted over six years. Weinstein's conviction for sexually assaulting Miriam Haley, a former TV production assistant, was overturned by New York's highest court in 2020 due to testimony from other women whose allegations were not part of the original case.

Following a retrial in the same year, a second jury found Weinstein guilty again. Once a powerful figure in the entertainment industry, Weinstein was an Oscar-winning producer responsible for blockbusters such as "Shakespeare in Love," "Pulp Fiction," and "Chocolat." However, his downfall began in 2017 when sexual assault allegations emerged, sparking the #MeToo movement.

At 74 years old, Weinstein is anticipated to appeal the sentence and could potentially serve his time until his late 80s. He adamantly denies any allegations of rape or sexual assault. Seated in a wheelchair, Weinstein was swiftly removed from the courtroom following the sentencing, while some of his accusers hugged each other in support.
