Typhoon Dujuan leaves 2 dead, 46,000 houses without power in Japan

Typhoon Dujuan has resulted in at least two fatalities and injuries in Japan, accompanied by significant disruption to households near Tokyo, according to authorities. The storm has since moved away from the country's coastline and into the Pacific Ocean, allowing officials to lift or reduce many heavy rain and landslide alerts.

The typhoon triggered the premature closure of a major video game trade show in Tokyo. Japan frequently encounters powerful typhoons during late summer and early autumn, with other storms this season disrupting events at the Asian Games held in the nation.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported one fatality in Kanagawa prefecture, close to Tokyo, and another in Chiba. Rescue efforts are ongoing for four individuals missing after landslides caused by intense rain, as reported by public broadcaster NHK. Over 46,000 households in Chiba, near Tokyo, remain without electricity as of Tuesday morning.

Dujuan weakened as it moved northeast, yet it brought unprecedented rainfall to certain parts of Tokyo. The island of Oshima, situated approximately 120km south of central Tokyo, recorded an impressive 832 millimeters of rain over a 48-hour period, more than double its average rainfall for the entire month of September, according to NHK.

Tokyo's Edogawa Ward experienced a record-breaking 282.5 millimeters of rainfall within a 24-hour timeframe. Scientists attribute the intensification of heavy rain risks to human-induced climate change, as a warmer atmosphere can retain more moisture.
