Typhoon Dujuan kills two in Japan, causes travel chaos near Tokyo

Early Tuesday, more than one million individuals across Japan were under evacuation advisories due to Typhoon Dujuan's impact, causing widespread disruption. Hundreds of flights were canceled, leaving thousands stranded. Torrential rains, flooding, and landslides affected the region, leading to the deaths of two people in Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures, near Tokyo. Local governments reported the fatalities as a result of landslides triggered by heavy rainfall.

The typhoon brought winds of approximately 144 kilometers per hour as it neared Katsuura City, located about 130 kilometers south of Tokyo. By early Tuesday, Dujuan had shifted away from the coast, heading northeast out to sea with slightly reduced winds according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA). Despite the storm's movement, over 9,000 households near Tokyo lost power, with more than 1.6 million residents urged to evacuate on Monday, though the advisories were not mandatory.

Landslide warnings were issued for Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka prefectures, with railway operators suspending services on certain lines. The JMA cautioned that the rain and winds were expected to intensify as the typhoon moved north, with the total rainfall potentially surpassing the average monthly rainfall for September, resulting in record-breaking heavy rain.

The Tokyo Game Show, one of the world's largest video-game trade fairs, was early closed on its final day due to Dujuan's effects. Additionally, a major outdoor music festival and a baseball match scheduled in Chiba were canceled. Residents shared photos of flooded roads near Kamakura station, a popular tourist destination, warning that traveling by car was dangerous. Flooding also affected parts of Ichikawa city, located east of Tokyo.
