Typhoon Dujuan leaves two dead, 46,000 houses without power in Japan

Typhoon Dujuan caused at least two deaths and five injuries in Japan, with thousands of homes near Tokyo left without power, according to authorities on Tuesday. The typhoon moved away from the Japanese coast and out into the Pacific by morning, allowing officials to lift or lower most heavy rain and landslide alerts. Dujuan had forced the early cancellation of one of the world's largest video game trade fairs in Tokyo's capital.

Japan frequently experiences strong typhoons during late summer and early autumn, with other storms this season disrupting events at the Asian Games held in the country. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported one fatality in Kanagawa prefecture, close to Tokyo, while another death occurred in Chiba. Rescue efforts continued for four people missing due to landslides caused by heavy rainfall, as per public broadcaster NHK.

Over 46,000 households in Chiba, near Tokyo, remained without electricity in the early hours of Tuesday. Although Dujuan weakened as it moved northeast, it brought record-breaking rainfall to parts of the Tokyo area. Oshima, an island about 120 kilometers south of central Tokyo, received 832 millimeters of rain over 48 hours, more than double its average rainfall for the entire month of September, reported NHK.

Tokyo's Edogawa Ward experienced a record 282.5 millimeters of rain over 24 hours. Scientists attribute the heightened risk of heavy rains to human-induced climate change, as a warmer atmosphere can hold more water.
