Teenager captured after 11 shot at Turkish high school

A 15-year-old boy has been apprehended following a shooting incident that left at least 11 individuals injured outside a high school in Turkey. The attack took place on Tuesday morning at the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Manisa, a western province of the country. Two victims were in critical condition following the assault, which was carried out by a gunman who subsequently escaped the scene.

The suspect's parents and grandfather were subsequently detained by authorities. This marks the third school shooting in Turkey this year, and the nation is still struggling with how to tackle the ongoing violence. CCTV footage appears to show the suspect walking down deserted streets while checking a shotgun, which is clearly visible.

He appears casually dressed and unflustered. Subsequent footage revealed the likely suspect, identified as a student at the school, running away from the scene with the weapon still in his possession. The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Under Turkish law, the teenager is obligated to appear before a court prior to his official arrest.

Turkey's education ministry released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident and the impact it has had on the nation's educational community. They announced that three national investigators have been dispatched to Manisa to assist with the investigation. The country experienced two deadly school shootings in April, which sparked outrage and prompted new security measures for the 2026-2027 academic year, including stricter gun controls.

Prior to these attacks, Turkey had not witnessed any school shootings. In April, a 14-year-old gunned down nine students aged 10 and 11, along with one teacher in Kahramanmaras. The perpetrator died at the scene.
