Teenager captured after 11 shot at Turkish high school

Eleven individuals sustained injuries in a shooting incident outside a high school in Turkey, with a 15-year-old male suspect being apprehended by police. The assailant reportedly discharged firearms before fleeing the scene on Tuesday morning, targeting the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Manisa, a western province.

The victims, all believed to be students, were primarily suffering from critical injuries. The suspect's family, including his parents and grandfather, who allegedly owned the firearm, have also been detained. This marks the third school shooting in Turkey this year and has prompted the government to reconsider measures to combat the escalating violence.

CCTV footage revealed the suspect strolling through deserted streets while examining a shotgun, which is distinctly visible in the recording. He appeared casually dressed and unencumbered. Subsequent footage showed the presumed suspect, a student at the school, fleeing the scene with the weapon still in hand. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Under Turkish law, the teenager is obligated to appear before a court before his official arrest. The Turkish education ministry released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident and noted that three of their national investigators have been dispatched to Manisa. Following two deadly school shootings in April, Turkey implemented stricter security measures for the 2026-2027 academic year, including more stringent gun controls.

Prior to these events, Turkey had not experienced a history of school shootings. In a separate incident in Kahramanmaras, a 14-year-old killed nine students aged 10 and 11 along with one teacher, with the gunman subsequently losing his life.
