Eleven injured in shooting outside Turkish school

Eleven individuals sustained injuries following a shooting incident outside a high school in Turkey. A 15-year-old male suspect was apprehended by police in connection with the attack. Two victims were left in critical condition after the gunman unleashed gunfire prior to escaping the scene on a Tuesday morning. The assault took place at the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the western Turkish province of Manisa.

All of the injured victims were identified as students. The suspect's immediate family members - his parents and grandfather - who reportedly possessed the weapon, have also been taken into custody. This marks the third school shooting incident in Turkey this year, as the government continues to address the escalating violence. Surveillance footage indicates the suspect walking along deserted streets, handling a shotgun, which is evidently visible.

He is observed wearing casual attire and seems unconcerned. Subsequent footage shows the presumed suspect, believed to be a school student, fleeing the scene while still holding the firearm. The motive behind the attack remains unclear at this point. Under Turkish law, the teenager is obligated to appear before a court before being formally arrested.

The education ministry expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that the nation and its educational community were profoundly affected. They have dispatched three national investigators to Manisa to investigate the matter further. The tragic event follows two deadly school shootings in April that sparked outrage across the country.

These shootings led to the implementation of new security measures for the 2026-2027 academic year, including stricter gun regulations. Prior to these incidents, Turkey had not experienced a history of school shootings. Notably, an attack in Kahramanmaras earlier in the year saw a 14-year-old gunman kill nine students aged 10 and 11, along with one teacher, before the shooter was killed at the scene.
