Police arrest man who allegedly killed girlfriend over HIV status in Enugu

Enugu police have apprehended a 30-year-old man, Okpara Emmanuel, in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Chinyere. The victim's identity and details are yet to be confirmed. Emmanuel was taken into custody at his residence in Enugu's Olympic Layout, as reported by the State Police Command's spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe.

According to preliminary investigations, the argument between Emmanuel and Chinyere arose over the source of a Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. During the heated exchange, Emmanuel allegedly struck Chinyere on the head with a pestle, leading to her death. He then wrapped her remains in nylon and locked them inside the toilet of his apartment.

The offensive odor from the decomposing body attracted neighbors, who eventually apprehended Emmanuel before the arrival of the police. The putrefying remains were later transported to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Efforts are underway to notify Chinyere's relatives.

Emmanuel confessed to the crime during preliminary interrogation, stating that the incident followed an argument over HIV infection allegations. He claimed that the fatal blow to Chinyere was delivered during the argument. State Police Commissioner, Mamman Giwa, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the incident and ensure Emmanuel faces trial upon completion of the investigation.

The police caution the public, especially young women, to inform trusted relatives or friends about their whereabouts and exercise caution when visiting or spending time with others.
