Police arrest man who allegedly killed girlfriend over HIV status in Enugu

The Enugu State Police have arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Emmanuel, in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Chinyere. The identity of the deceased was confirmed by the police but her full address and surname remained undisclosed. Emmanuel was apprehended at his residence in Olympic Layout, Enugu, as reported by the Command's spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, on Tuesday.

During initial questioning, Emmanuel admitted to killing Chinyere following a dispute over the source of HIV infection. He claimed that during the argument, he struck her on the head with a pestle, causing her death. The body was later wrapped in nylon and concealed inside the toilet of the apartment.

Police officers discovered the decomposing remains of the victim, whose body had been emitting an offensive odor, prompting neighbors to force open the door and apprehend Emmanuel prior to the arrival of the police. His remains were transported to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, and efforts were underway to notify her relatives.

Emmanuel confessed to the crime during preliminary interrogation, stating that the incident occurred on September 19, after an argument between him and Chinyere over allegations of HIV transmission. He proceeded to hit her with a pestle, resulting in her death. The police have ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the incident and ensure that the suspect is brought to court upon the completion of investigations.

The police chief also cautioned the public, particularly young women, to inform trusted relatives or friends of their whereabouts and exercise caution when interacting with others.
