Afghanistan situation demands continued attention in view of implications for regional peace, Dar tells OIC moot

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized the ongoing need for focus on Afghanistan's situation during a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Tuesday. The deputy stressed the importance of the issue in light of its potential impact on regional peace, security, and stability. Dar spoke at the OIC’s Contact Group on Afghanistan meeting, held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Recalling significant events from August 2021, Dar pointed out that Afghanistan experienced a "watershed moment" following the withdrawal of US troops and the Taliban's re-establishment of power in Kabul. He highlighted that Pakistan was the first nation to extend a warm welcome to Afghan citizens during this transitional period. Dar added that Pakistan also hosted an OIC session in December 2021 to garner support from Muslim countries and mobilize international assistance to tackle Afghanistan's humanitarian crisis.

Dar expressed disappointment that the Taliban had failed to meet the expectations of OIC members and the broader international community. He reiterated the desire for the Taliban to uphold Afghanistan's international commitments, including eliminating terrorism, promoting inclusivity, and safeguarding the human rights of its citizens.
