NATO’s top generals meet in Copenhagen with Ukraine at top of agenda, as warnings grow that Russia may strike Alliance next

NATO's leading military figures convened in Copenhagen, with Ukraine at the forefront of their discussions. The Military Committee, comprised of 32 defense chiefs and two strategic commanders, gathered to reaffirm their backing for Ukraine, boost its readiness, and select a new chair, as per Ukraine's General Staff. The meeting coincides with intelligence warnings and statements from Western leaders that Russia might be gearing up to strike NATO, not just Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently disclosed to his parliament that intelligence indicates Russia's intentions to carry out drone and missile attacks on NATO countries. The annual conference, presided over by Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone alongside the Alliance's two strategic commanders, built upon decisions from the recent NATO summit in Ankara.

The focus was on deterrence, defense, and new technology, with Ukraine woven throughout the discussions. Cavo Dragone reaffirmed NATO's steadfast support for Ukraine, emphasizing that allies continue to deliver equipment, conduct training, and provide aid while learning from Ukraine's defense experiences. The admiral pointedly mentioned Russia's "reckless behavior," including airspace violations, drone incidents, and hybrid activities.

He praised allied forces for their rapid responses to these incidents and vowed that NATO would defend every inch of its territory. Germany's Carsten Breuer has been elected as the next chair of the Military Committee, NATO's highest military body, succeeding Cavo Dragone. Breuer, Germany's chief of defense since 2023, is poised to assume the role in the summer of 2027 for a three-year term.

His selection, backed by Washington, underscores Germany's increasing influence within the Alliance's command structure.
