Malaysia backs Saudi sovereignty, calls for end to Houthi hostilities

KUALA LUMPUR, September 22 — Malaysia has vehemently condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, which included strikes against civilians and civilian infrastructure, and expressed its solidarity with the Kingdom. The nation's Foreign Ministry affirmed Malaysia's support for Saudi Arabia's endeavors to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the security and safety of its people, as per the United Nations Charter and international law.

"Malaysia also backs all efforts aimed at reducing tensions and an immediate cessation of hostilities," the statement read on Monday. This comes as tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis have escalated, with Saudi authorities asserting that a missile fired at Riyadh on September 19 was intercepted and destroyed. The Houthis also allegedly targeted civilians and civilian infrastructure in Baish, Taif, Farasan, and Yanbu, though these attacks were prevented.

The Saudi Press Agency reported that on September 14, Houthi missile and drone strikes on Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif injured 13 civilians and damaged several homes and vehicles, according to the Saudi-led coalition. The Foreign Ministry reiterated Malaysia's longstanding partnership with Saudi Arabia and its dedication to further solidifying bilateral ties.

"Malaysia holds great importance in its longstanding partnership with Saudi Arabia, and remains fully committed to further strengthening this partnership for mutual interests of both nations," the ministry declared.
