Malaysia backs Saudi sovereignty, calls for end to Houthi hostilities

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — The Malaysian government has strongly condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, expressing full support for the Kingdom's sovereignty and territorial integrity. In a statement on Monday, Malaysia's Foreign Ministry emphasized its solidarity with Saudi Arabia, urging an immediate end to the ongoing hostilities and de-escalation efforts in line with the United Nations Charter and international law.

The statement comes after a surge in tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, with Saudi authorities reporting that a ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh was intercepted and destroyed on Sept 19. The Houthis also attempted to target civilians and civilian infrastructure in Baish, Taif, Farasan, and Yanbu, though their attacks were unsuccessful.

Furthermore, the Saudi-led coalition reported that Houthi missile and drone strikes on Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif resulted in 13 civilian injuries and significant damage to houses and vehicles on Sept 14. Malaysia has reaffirmed its longstanding partnership with Saudi Arabia, committing to further strengthening bilateral ties for the mutual benefit of both nations.
