Police: Preliminary probe finds Ipoh motorcyclists speeding in convoy before fatal crash

Tanjong Malim, September 21 — Police preliminary findings revealed that motorcyclists involved in a fatal accident on Jalan Jelapang-Ampang, Ipoh, were allegedly speeding in a convoy at the time of the incident. Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin stated that some members of the group, who had traveled from Ipoh, lost control and crashed into a Toyota Vios after the collision.

The route had been identified as a hotspot for illegal street racing and road hooliganism, with police conducting morning operations to deter such activities. However, after operations concluded around 3am, the motorcyclists reportedly returned to resume their illegal activities. All parties involved have been identified, and further investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident, including confirming vehicle ownership.

One victim, a 19-year-old male from Perak, remains in the ICU at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital, Ipoh, awaiting his statement to be recorded. The accident, which occurred at approximately 3:35am on September 19, resulted in the deaths of three male motorcyclists aged between 19 and 20, and nine others sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe.

The Ipoh district police headquarters' Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division conducted 64 operations to curb illegal road racing from January to September 19, resulting in 11 arrests under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and 41 vehicle seizures under Section 64(1) of the same Act.
