Gianni Infantino open to FIFA reform ahead of 2027 elections

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has signaled his openness to an independent review of the organization's governance structure, in response to widespread criticism following the cancellation of the "FIFA Forward Enterprise" (FFE) project. On Monday, Infantino wrote a letter to FIFA Council members and the 211 member associations, proposing the review ahead of the upcoming FIFA Council meeting on October 15.

He stated he would ask the Council to consider an external, independent assessment of FIFA's current governance framework and recommend potential improvements, ensuring a direct, structured, and time-bound consultation with confederations and member associations.

The backlash over the FFE concept arose when private investors were revealed to be planning to purchase shares in World Cup and other competitions. Infantino had anticipated the proposal would remain confidential until it could be fully presented to the Council and member associations. However, the news leaked prematurely, leading to widespread criticism and internal rifts. High-profile members, including several from UEFA, withdrew their backing for Infantino.

UEFA recently began drafting criminal charges against Infantino in U.S. courts related to the FFE plan, requesting all relevant documents. Despite the controversy, Infantino remains committed to increasing FIFA's revenue for the sport. He emphasized that withdrawing the proposal does not diminish FIFA's ambition or responsibility to reinvest a larger portion of its success into football.

The governance crisis occurs at a critical political moment for FIFA's leadership, as Infantino will run for re-election for a fourth time in March 2027, with any potential challengers having until November 18 to submit their candidates.
