Infantino proposes external review of Fifa governance

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has suggested an external review of the organization's governance structure and is open to implementing reforms. In a letter to Fifa council members, Infantino proposed two key changes to be discussed at an upcoming council meeting. The first suggestion involves commissioning an independent external review of Fifa's current governance framework for major strategic initiatives, with the aim of recommending potential improvements.

The second proposal is to establish a consultation period where Fifa can seek input from confederations, member associations, and relevant stakeholders on ways to strengthen decision-making processes and governance. Infantino's proposals come in response to growing pressure and criticism of his aborted Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan.

Uefa and Concacaf, two leading confederations, have requested that Fifa pay $10 million to all 211 member associations from its cash reserves. Furthermore, both Uefa and Concacaf have called for Fifa to release documents related to the FFE plan, which would have created a new company to manage commercial and ticketing rights. The 56-year-old Swiss-Italian leader will seek re-election for a fourth term in March 2027, with opposition candidates having until November 18 to nominate an alternative.
