Flights scrapped, evacuations urged as Typhoon Dujuan wallops Japan

Heavy rain, flooding and landslides have struck the Tokyo region as Typhoon Dujuan passed by. Over one million people received evacuation advisories early Tuesday, with hundreds of flights cancelled. Two deaths were confirmed in Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures after landslides triggered by heavy rainfall. Typhoon Dujuan had winds of 144 km/h when it approached around 130 km south of Katsuura City near Tokyo.

By early Tuesday, the storm had moved northeast out to sea with reduced winds. Japan Airlines cancelled 135 flights and All Nippon Airways scrapped 140, leaving more than 9,000 households near Tokyo without power. Evacuations were voluntary, though landslide warnings were issued for Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa and Shizuoka prefectures.

Railway services in Tokyo and surrounding areas were suspended. The JMA warned that the rainfall could surpass the average monthly September rainfall, causing record-breaking heavy rain. The typhoon forced the premature closure of the Tokyo Game Show, a major outdoor music festival and a baseball match in Chiba. Flooding was reported in Kamakura, a popular tourist spot, making travel by car dangerous.
