China confirms Xi to visit US this week for Trump talks

Beijing has officially announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping will embark on a trip to the United States this week to engage in discussions with President Donald Trump. The visit is set to span from Wednesday to Friday, as confirmed by the Chinese government. Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated that the two leaders aim to have an in-depth exchange of views on significant matters relating to China-US relations and global peace and development.

Guo Jiakun emphasized that China and the US seek to enhance the depth of their relationship based on constructive strategic stability, foster dialogue and cooperation, and address their differences appropriately. In a parallel development, it was reported that US President Trump will personally greet Xi Jinping upon his arrival at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday before their meetings the following day.

This gesture mirrors a similar welcome extended to the Chinese Vice-President when he visited Beijing for Xi's state visit in May.

The cornerstone of the upcoming discussions is expected to be the ongoing trade war between the two economic giants. Although a tariff truce has been in place for nearly a year, a comprehensive agreement remains elusive. A more direct threat hanging over the talks is the potential for military conflict over Taiwan. Despite a recent tariff truce, the two superpowers have yet to forge a lasting settlement.

Trade matters are not the only focus of the talks. Vice Premier of China, He Lifeng, is currently in the US for discussions with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, with a specific emphasis on creating a communication channel for artificial intelligence concerns. The specter of the Iran war looms large as well, as China endeavors to sidestep US sanctions on countries trading with Tehran, even as reports suggest Beijing provided intelligence for a strike on US troops.
