Anambra debt: APC campaign council demands Obi honour resignation promise

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has called on presidential candidate Peter Obi of the New Democratic Congress to fulfill his promise of withdrawing from the 2027 presidential race if it is proven that he left Anambra State with a debt burden. A statement released by the council's spokesman, Dele Alake, revealed that Obi contracted $123.77 million in external loans during his eight-year tenure as Anambra governor.

The Anambra State Government disclosed that Obi spent approximately $4.05 billion during his time in office, leaving behind eight external borrowings for various projects, including malaria control, erosion management, education, and healthcare. Subsequent administrations continued to service these debts. The council argued that borrowing for development was acceptable, but not when done by a man who claimed to leave the state with a clean bill of health.

They highlighted that Obi failed to pay workers' salaries in some ministries and that his administration left behind unaddressed arrears, pension, and gratuity liabilities. The APC PCC urged Obi to acknowledge his misrepresentations, seek forgiveness from the Anambra people, and resign from the presidential race, as his actions contradicted his promises.
