AfD tops another German state poll, Merz’s CDU crashes to historic low

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party topped the polls in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's recent election, marking a significant defeat for Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU). According to preliminary results, the AfD secured 38.3% of the vote, surpassing the Social Democratic Party (SPD) at 35.4%. The CDU, however, achieved an all-time low of 4.9%, its worst performance in a German state election since 1949.

This outcome represented the AfD's second victory in a German state election within a month, following its near-majority status in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6. In Berlin, the Left Party emerged as the largest party with 25.3%, followed by the CDU at 19% and the AfD at 16.3%.

Merz criticized the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania result as a "disaster," yet pledged to remain in office and pursue his reform agenda, emphasizing the need for "backbone, steadfastness, and patience." The poor CDU performance adds pressure on Merz, whose government has been criticized for Germany's weak economy, high living costs, and proposed pension, tax, and healthcare reforms.

The AfD's surge in support, particularly in eastern Germany, has been fueled by concerns over migration, living costs, and Germany's stance on Ukraine. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, SPD Premier Manuela Schwesig noted that opposition to Berlin's Ukraine policy was a key factor influencing voters, with some also favoring the resumption of Russian energy supplies via the Nord Stream pipelines.

Despite its growing electoral support, the AfD remains excluded from government due to Germany's mainstream parties maintaining a political "firewall" against forming coalitions with the party. However, the latest results underscore the AfD's growing challenge to Germany's established political parties.
