Merz pledges continuity after historic CDU state setback

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has vowed to stay in office and continue with his government's reform agenda following the party's worst performance in a German state election. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) fell below the parliamentary threshold in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, collecting only 4.9 percent of the vote. This left the CDU without seats in the regional parliament.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured 38.2 percent, while the governing Social Democrats took 35.5 percent. Voter turnout was 78.1 percent. Merz called the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania result a "disaster" but refused to step down as chancellor or party leader. He emphasized that the government would proceed with planned changes to taxation, pensions, healthcare, and bureaucracy, emphasizing the need for Germany to undergo reform rather than a change in direction.

Merz stated that "What now needs to be done requires backbone, steadfastness and patience," highlighting his intention to demonstrate these qualities as CDU chairman and chancellor. The CDU's defeat in Berlin also added pressure, with the party losing its largest force in the city parliament, garnering just 18.8 percent of second votes, a 9.5 percentage point drop since the previous election.

The Alternative for Germany emerged as the strongest party in Berlin, obtaining 25.7 percent, up 13.4 percentage points. The outcome in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin has intensified scrutiny of Merz's leadership and the coalition government's ability to respond to voter dissatisfaction regarding the economy, migration, and public services.

The CDU's poor performance in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was particularly noteworthy, as the party had been continuously represented in the state parliament since German reunification. The defeat marked the first time the CDU failed to enter the state legislature since the Federal Republic's establishment, achieving a 4.9 percent share, which is below the 5 percent threshold.
