Trump to turn Washington’s triumphal arch into military complex

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he plans to transform a triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery into a military complex housing drones, snipers, and ammunition. The president cited national security concerns as the driving force behind the decision. This announcement comes in line with Trump's broader effort to redevelop Washington, D.C., which includes adding his name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Critics, including preservationists, argue that the proposed changes could diminish the historic nature of the landmarks. In a social media post, Trump stated that he agreed to the transformation at the strong request of the military, aiming to equip the 76-meter arch with a top-grade military complex, storage for drones and sniper ammunition, and the ability to rapidly deploy these assets.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has stated that the arch will not pose a hazard to aircraft, but additional requirements include an eternal flame on top of the structure.

Aviation experts have raised safety concerns due to the arch's proximity to Reagan Washington National Airport. Furthermore, veterans have filed lawsuits to block the construction of the arch, arguing that it would damage the historic sightline between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. The White House and the Defense Department have not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
