Trump to turn Washington’s triumphal arch into military complex

US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he plans to convert the 76-meter triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery in Washington into a military complex, according to a White House press briefing. The complex would house drones, snipers, and large quantities of ammunition, as well as store significant amounts of sniper ammunition.

Trump cited national security concerns for the move, similar to the rationale behind a $400 million ballroom complex being built on the site of the former East Wing of the White House. The president did not specify any particular threats. These projects are part of Trump's broader effort to reshape Washington, including adding his name to the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Critics, including preservationists, have argued that these projects could alter or diminish historic landmarks. In a social media post, Trump stated that he agreed to the transformation at the "strong request" of the military, citing the arch's ability to rapidly deploy large numbers of drones and snipers on the roof and plaza areas.

The Federal Aviation Administration deemed the arch safe for aircraft but required the installation of an eternal flame on top, clearing an aviation hurdle for the project. Aviation experts have raised safety concerns due to the arch's proximity to Reagan Washington National Airport, while veterans have filed lawsuits to block the arch, arguing that it would obliterate the historic sightline between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
