Mobile police station to be set up near Najib’s residence

Kuala Lumpur, Friday: A mobile police station will be deployed near former Prime Minister Najib Razak's residence at Langgak Duta starting tomorrow, as part of security arrangements for his potential transfer from prison to his home. Sentul police chief Anuar Bakri Salam clarified that the mobile unit does not aim to provide constant 24-hour protection for Najib.

Instead, its primary roles are to ensure safety for journalists, local residents, and supporters, and to manage traffic congestion during the transfer process. Anuar also mentioned that the police deployment would consist of one supervisor, two personnel, and a mobile patrol vehicle unit. The official confirmation of Najib's residence being designated for his house arrest has not yet been received, as the prisons department would ultimately be responsible for monitoring him.

Four officers from the prisons department visited the residence yesterday for an inspection. Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar said the standard operating procedures for Najib's house arrest would encompass matters like visits, security, and movement monitoring after receiving the official pardon letter. Najib, 73, received a conditional pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Friday, enabling him to serve the remainder of his prison term in the SRC International case under house arrest until August 23, 2028, contingent on the payment of his RM50 million fine and adherence to additional conditions.

The Agong heads the Federal Territories Pardons Board, consisting of the attorney-general, the federal territories minister, and three board members appointed by him. The legal affairs division of the Prime Minister's Department emphasized that Najib must fulfill all the stipulated conditions; otherwise, the conditional pardon would be revoked.

Najib was incarcerated in August 2022 following the Federal Court's confirmation of his conviction for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering involving RM42 million belonging to SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1MDB. His original 12-year sentence was later reduced to six years, and the initial RM210 million fine was decreased to RM50 million.
