Centre appoints 7 judges to Delhi HC after SC Collegium recommends 8 names

The Centre recently confirmed the appointment of seven new judges to the Delhi High Court. Following this, the total number of judges in the High Court, which has 60 sanctioned positions, is now 50. This decision came after the Supreme Court collegium proposed the names of eight judicial officers to the Centre on September 10. Four judges in the Delhi High Court are scheduled to retire in the coming months.

The respective retiring dates are October for Justice CS Sudha, November for Justice Anil Kshetarpal, and later this year for Justices Girish Kathpalia and Manoj Jain.

Justice V Kameswar Rao, the second senior-most judge of the Delhi High Court, was recently appointed as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. On Saturday, the Law Ministry notified the appointments of these seven judges, who are being promoted from the district judiciary services' cadre. Among the newly appointed judges are Justice Nivedita Sharma and Nisha Sahay Saxena, who have been designated as permanent judges.

The remaining four judges - Sanjay Sharma, Bharat Parashar, Aditi Choudhary, Arun Bhardwaj, and Dinesh Bhatt - have been appointed as additional judges. Justice Bharadwaj, the incumbent Registrar General at the Delhi HC, and Justice Parashar, the incumbent Secretary General of the Supreme Court, are also part of this group.

The Supreme Court collegium had suggested the names of eight judicial officers for appointment to the High Court on September 10. Gurvinder Pal Singh, currently the principal district and sessions judge at Rohini courts complex, was recommended by the collegium but was not appointed. The Delhi High Court had proposed the names of these eight judicial officers on an administrative basis in April.
