UNGA 81: Key issues world leaders will tackle at the 2026 UN General Assembly

World leaders will gather in New York this week for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). President William Ruto will join other global leaders at United Nations Headquarters for the annual diplomatic meeting. The session will focus on restoring trust, managing transformation, and delivering a UN that serves all. Over 130 heads of state and government are expected to attend in person, alongside ministers, diplomats, UN officials, and international organizations.

The week-long high-level week will include general debates, high-level meetings, diplomatic consultations, bilateral engagements, and side events covering various topics such as climate change, health, development, technology, peace, and security. The 81st session comes amid debates over multilateral cooperation, financing for development, climate action, and the UN's ability to respond to rapidly changing global challenges.

The General Debate from September 22 to 28, 2026, will be the centerpiece of UNGA 81. During this high-level week, leaders from the world's 193 UN member states will address the Assembly and present their countries' positions and priorities. The session will also mark the 40th anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Right to Development and the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.
