Canada, France Agree to Closer Ties in Defense, Economy

French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a deepening of bilateral cooperation between their nations on Sunday from Saint Pierre and Miquelon, a French territory off Canada's Atlantic coast. The two leaders discussed areas such as aerospace, energy, critical minerals, and advanced technologies like quantum computing, satellites, and supercomputing.

This move comes as Canada accelerates its relationship with Europe amidst strained ties with the US. Macron emphasized that France and Canada are two independent nations committed to democracy, the rule of law, free trade, and scientific decisions, while Carney stressed the need to strengthen ties between Canada, France, and the EU, with a focus on shared values.

The leaders also proposed joint collaboration on artificial intelligence. Saint Pierre and Miquelon, France's only North American territory, hosts a population of fewer than 6,000 people and is a remnant of France's former North American possessions.
