During his three-day visit to the archipelago, Macron underscored the symbolic importance of the trip. Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, with a population of fewer than 6,000, represents France's sole remaining North American territory, a remnant of the grand territories once controlled by Paris in present-day Canada and the United States. The French leader argues that US President Donald Trump's second term has bolstered his belief that Europe must become more sovereign, particularly in matters of security.

Meanwhile, Carney is grappling with a growing dispute with US President Donald Trump, who has even contemplated annexing Canada. In response, Carney has welcomed the notion of his country becoming the European Union's first associate member, a proposal that has been firmly rejected by Ottawa.
