Poilievre says Canada will never be ’28th state’ of EU at Ontario rally

Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre asserted Canada would "never be the 28th state of the European Union" during a rally in Brantford, Ontario on Sunday. This declaration came amid Prime Minister Mark Carney's pursuit of closer European ties, even as the nation navigates a trade war with the United States. Days prior, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had expressed her desire for Canada to become the first "associate member" of the EU.

Poilievre underscored that Canada already maintains a free trade agreement with Europe and enjoys robust defense alliances through NATO. However, he reiterated his opposition to the import of European taxes, laws, and what he perceives as "reckless European-style immigration" into Canada. The nature of the potential EU partnership remains undefined, but Carney has expressed interest in broadening connections, such as enhancing opportunities for young people and establishing an integrated market for financial services.
