Canada and France in talks to deepen ties and ‘live our lives as we choose’ while Macron also seeks oil and gas as Iran war disrupts supplies

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and French President Emmanuel Macron held talks on Sunday, aiming to strengthen the ties between their nations in various sectors, including space, defense, energy, and business. Carney emphasized that Canada is looking for new economic and security partners beyond the United States, while Macron highlighted the importance of the discussions in helping France secure oil and gas supplies amid the ongoing Iran war.

Both leaders discussed expanding cooperation in key areas such as aerospace, energy, critical minerals, and advanced technologies like quantum computing, satellites, and supercomputing. The meeting comes in the wake of recent U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs, demands for economic concessions, and his proposal to make Canada the 51st U.S. state.

In response, Carney has been actively seeking to reduce Canada's dependence on the U.S. and pursue deeper economic, security, and political relationships with Europe.
