World Cleanup Day: GFF begins sanitation education in local communities

On the eve of World Cleanup Day, the GF Foundation, a Ghanaian social enterprise, has launched sanitation education initiatives in communities across the Greater Accra region. The primary goal is to promote safe waste disposal, personal hygiene, and environmental cleanliness among the populace, thereby preventing the spread of diseases.

In its efforts to educate the public on proper waste management, the Foundation will impart knowledge on safe water disposal techniques, including the importance of proper handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, regular bathing, and respiratory etiquette such as covering one's mouth during coughs. Additionally, the Foundation will provide guidance on the appropriate use of toilets, latrines, and the responsible management of solid waste and wastewater.

Haggar Quao, Head of Community Environmental Research at the GF Foundation, emphasized the organization's commitment to environmental sanitation and the necessity of maintaining these practices beyond World Cleanup Day. "Cleaning our gutters shouldn't begin and end with World Cleanup Day. It must be part of our culture," she urged.

The Foundation called upon all Ghanaians to participate in the massive cleanup exercise scheduled for the following day, during which the organization and its volunteers will desilt gutters in Nungua and its surrounding areas, starting from the Nungua Market to the Nungua Police Station. Volunteers and supporters are encouraged to join hands in the endeavor to keep the environment clean. This cleanup effort will extend to neighboring communities.

World Cleanup Day, an annual event that takes place on September 20, mobilizes millions of volunteers worldwide across over 190 countries to address the global solid waste crisis.
