'Miracle' baby born healthy after mother's chemotherapy

Jya Banks, a Sunshine Coast mother, was diagnosed with advanced blood cancer at 14 weeks pregnant and began intensive chemotherapy while still 15 weeks pregnant. She delivered a healthy baby boy in mid-July and subsequently went into remission three weeks later. Despite the rarity of such treatment, doctors highlighted that more pregnant women are undergoing chemotherapy as cancer rates rise across the nation.

At 14 weeks pregnant, Jya Banks was shocked to discover tumors in her neck, underarms, chest, and abdomen, with the abdominal tumor measuring 10 centimeters. Initially fearful for her own life and the baby's health, Jya started chemotherapy in February while pregnant and gave birth to Harvey Banks on July 20, who displayed no health issues.

The medical team at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) closely monitored Jya and the baby, managing complications and ensuring optimal treatment. Despite the risks and complications, the family celebrated the remission of Jya's cancer three weeks after the birth. However, medical professionals emphasize that outcomes are not guaranteed and ongoing progress in medical treatment is crucial.
