Uttarakhand Launched Expedition To Map 100 Major Trekking Routes Using GPS And GIS Technology

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated an expedition team on Friday, as they embark on a mission to map 100 major trekking routes in the state utilizing GPS and GIS technology. The primary objectives of this initiative are to enhance safety, navigation, emergency response, and tourism infrastructure for trekkers exploring the Himalayan trails. Uttarakhand boasts numerous popular trekking destinations, ranging from high-altitude valleys and meadows to routes leading to religious and heritage sites.

The mapping exercise will aid trekkers by providing crucial information regarding trail locations, distances, and other navigation details. Offline access to the information will be particularly beneficial in remote mountain areas where reliable connectivity might be scarce or absent. According to Tourism Secretary Dheeraj Garbyal, the expedition will facilitate the development of both an online and offline GPS navigation application, covering all 100 routes.

The survey will also help identify suitable areas for campsites, waste management facilities such as dustbins and toilets, further supporting environmental protection efforts.

During the flag-off ceremony, CM Dhami remarked, "This is the first time such an innovation is being implemented in Uttarakhand, providing immense convenience." Furthermore, a navigation app is being developed to complement the mapping exercise. The CM expressed confidence that the app will benefit not only locals but also trekkers from other places and states, thus promoting tourism across the region.
