US, Denmark and Greenland strike deal to expand US military presence, falling short of trump’s acquisition goal

The United States, Denmark, and Greenland have reached an agreement to strengthen US military presence on the strategically important Arctic island of Greenland, according to a report by Reuters. President Donald Trump announced the deal, which guarantees Washington permanent access, basing, and overflight rights on the island, preventing adversaries from establishing bases or making sensitive investments there.

While the agreement does not transfer Greenland to the United States, it aims to bolster US security and defense capabilities in the region. The agreement does not alter the existing overflight and basing rights that the US already holds under a 1951 treaty. However, the full extent of the deal remains unclear, including potential construction of new US bases.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen highlighted the agreement's recognition of Greenland's interests in international cooperation, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized how it permanently and completely addresses US national security concerns over Greenland.
