US and Denmark reach Greenland security agreement - Trump

US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States and Denmark have reached an agreement granting Washington permanent control over Greenland's security. The deal, to be signed by Denmark and Greenland at the UN General Assembly in New York, prevents Russia and China from establishing bases in the Arctic territory. Trump stated that no adversary will have a military presence or make sensitive investments in Greenland without U.S. approval.

The 80-year-old president described the agreement as "infinite" and said the U.S. would immediately begin building up a significant military presence in Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen welcomed the prospect of a favorable agreement for Greenland, Denmark, and the United States, emphasizing that it benefits NATO and Europe.

Trump has previously warned about Russia and China's attempts to gain a foothold in Greenland due to its strategic importance in the Arctic. The deal ensures that neither country can have a base in Greenland, send troops there, or invest in sensitive sectors without U.S. consent. Greenland's Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, stated that the agreement strengthens the territory's security.

The agreement comes after Trump reportedly reached a deal with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the Davos economic forum, though the details of that arrangement remain unclear. The U.S. has reportedly targeted three new military bases in southern Greenland, supplementing the existing Pituffik base in the north. The 1951 defense pact, updated in 2004, already permits Washington to increase troop deployments and military installations in Greenland with prior notice to Denmark and Greenland.
