UK backs Falklands firms after Argentina blocks oil project

The United Kingdom has demonstrated support for businesses and individuals operating in the Falkland Islands following an Argentine federal judge's ruling to halt the Sea Lion oil project. Minister for Overseas Territories Uma Kumaran affirmed the UK's commitment to the Falkland Islands' right to develop its natural resources. The judge's order, issued by Judge Mariel Borruto, prohibits British and Israeli companies, Rockhopper Exploration and Navitas Petroleum, from drilling, constructing offshore installations, and building ports.

Argentina has intensified legal actions against companies involved in oil exploration near the Falkland Islands, with President Javier Milei's government introducing a bill to harshen penalties for unauthorized exploitation of natural resources. The UK government considers these actions unacceptable and stands in solidarity with the international community against attempts to politicize international mechanisms against individuals engaged in business with the Falklands.

The sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the UK dates back decades, with Argentina referring to the islands as the Malvinas. Kumaran emphasized the UK's dedication to supporting economic activity in the territory.
