Trump Signs Sweeping Russia Sanctions Bill

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a comprehensive Russia sanctions bill on Friday, setting the stage for heightened economic pressure on Russia due to its involvement in Ukraine. The legislation specifically targets Russia's energy and defense sectors, as well as its fleet of tankers circumventing existing sanctions, with the aim of limiting Moscow's resources for its war efforts.

Democrats opposed the bill, arguing it also authorizes Trump to impose 100% tariffs on China, India, and other nations to reduce their reliance on Russian oil and gas, while extending sanctions on Iran. The bill, named the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 in honor of the late South Carolina Republican, passed both the House and Senate.

The Kremlin cautioned that additional U.S. sanctions would hinder peace negotiations in Ukraine. The Kremlin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, stated that further sanctions would complicate efforts to achieve a peace settlement in Ukraine. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has classified The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing its operations and threatening staff with prosecution.

This comes after Russia labeled the newspaper as a "foreign agent," which The Moscow Times rejects, asserting their commitment to impartial reporting. Despite these challenges, The Moscow Times calls for support to continue their work, emphasizing the importance of independent journalism in the face of repression.
