AKPS steps up border security readiness ahead Johor Bahru‑Singapore RTS Link launch in January

The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is intensifying its border security readiness and inspection capabilities in anticipation of the January launch of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. Director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain informed reporters that the agency is utilizing technology, personnel training, and operational simulations to enhance its inspection of documents and goods.

However, Zain emphasized that technology alone cannot be the sole solution to security threats at the country's entry points. He stressed the importance of a combined approach, including training and effective use of technology, to address potential risks.

AKPS plans to advise operators on suitable technologies to bolster security and mitigate threats. Regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to combat illicit goods smuggling, Zain noted that the technology requires a learning phase, specifically machine learning, before reaching maturity. Currently, 400 AKPS trainees are undergoing a three-month training program at the Segamat Police Training Centre, with the goal of completing their training by the end of September.

Following this, they will be deployed to the RTS Link in October, with dry runs scheduled over the following two months to ensure full preparedness for January. During their initial deployment, the trainees will work alongside senior officers at the Sultan Iskandar Building to gain experience in document and goods inspection.
